Rapid Diagnostic Testing (RDT) is a fairly new technique in medicine. It is also known as Structural Analysis, Mass Spectral Analysis, or RAST. The reason it has become so popular in recent years is that it can provide data faster than a classic antigen panel test or EIA. Here are some of the advantages and disadvantages of a rapid diagnostic test.
The one step rapid diagnostic test kits for all diseases and disorders are designed to measure and/or detect the first evidence of abnormalities. A one step rapid diagnostic test kit is one of two types of ELISA, where one-step ELISA procedures are performed on fresh frozen samples. The second type is the one-step protocol, where previously collected material is subjected to one-step procedures. For example, most laboratories will use fresh urine samples for acute hepatitis C virus testing (HCV) evaluation. If someone were to draw a urine sample on their day off work and immediately submit it to a lab for analysis, it could take weeks or months to find the results. A sample submitted several weeks or months ago would show different results compared to one taken the very next day.
If a rapid diagnostic test kit was used, it could be used immediately, eliminating weeks or months of waiting for results. Because it was pre-tested, there was no waiting for a sample to be processed or sent to a lab. Instead, immediate results could be determined. With some rapid diagnostic test kits, this is as simple as placing the drop onto blotting paper.
One of the main advantages of these tests is that they are painless and inexpensive. Most laboratories charge less than $30 for a one-step sample collection. A one-step sample involves a single blood test, which checks for: HIV, Hepatitis A, C, E, or R hepatitis, and Varicella-zoster virus (VZV). For the HIV test, a sample is tested directly with a latex blood test; for the hepatitis A test, it is tested directly with a liver function test (LFTC); and for the C and E viruses, it is tested directly with an enzyme immunoassay (EIA). If any of the tests for each virus are positive, then a positive result is instantly obvious.
There are various other types of tests that can be used in an uncut sheet, but these four are the most common. The first two tests – Hepatitis A and B – measure antibody levels in a blood sample. The third, EIA, measures the level of creatinine in a urine sample. The last, qualitative test, uses a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) to generate a peak level of a fluorescently expressed polysaccharides of interest. This includes both proteins and fats.
Each rapid diagnostic test kit includes instructions which should be followed. For the creatine kinase test, instructions state that a one-step ctni troponin assay should be performed in duplicate. The kits also specify the minimum and maximum concentrations of creatinine that should be detected. The instructions will also indicate when results from this test are complete.
A rapid test kit may contain a fluorescently expressed polysaccharide of interest (e.g., wulthamine, methylene blue, etc.). It should preferably have a peak level of at least three log units, with a range of four log units to a maximum of six log units. The fluorescent dye for the polysaccharides may be any one of a large range of colors, depending on the needs of the patient. In addition, the rapid test kits may include a battery pack or an associated solution to replace the fluorescent dye. The battery pack should be used only for the indicated tests; it should not be used to replace the analyzer.
Rapid diagnostic testing can save medical personnel valuable time, increase laboratory accuracy, and reduce costs related to laboratory errors and procedures.
